macOS/Windows/Linux (Ubuntu) v2.23.0408-release
New:
- Yale, Bopomofo/Zhuyin, and IPA: You can now choose to use Yale, Bopomofo/Zhuyin, and IPA to display pronunciation, in addition to the existing Jyutping and Pinyin. Thanks for the feature request @vintotal!- Wildcard searching: When searching using Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Jyutping, or Pinyin, you can now use * and ? as wildcards to mean any number of characters and one character respectively. For example, maybe you remember a 成語 ending with 鄉 — you could search ???鄉 to find 走鄉隨鄉!
- Exact match searching: Surrounding your search with "" quotes means that the dictionary will only find entries that match exactly what is enclosed within the quotes. For example, "鄉" will return only the entry 鄉, not 鄉鎮 or 走鄉隨鄉.
- Adjust interface size: If you find that the interface was too small before, good news! You can make it humongous or tiny, with five size settings. @AlienKevin this one’s for you!
- Magnify and Open In New Window: To see a larger version of an entry, or open it in a different window, there are new buttons in the entry detail view.
- New dictionaries: If you are a new user, the program now comes with HSK3 tags and Wiktionary! If you're upgrading from an older version, please visit the Jyut Dictionary website to download and add these new dictionaries.
Improvements:
- Refreshed light mode UI on Windows and Linux: Light more now has less grey, and the UI has been updated to fit in better with Windows 11.- Immediate settings: Settings now apply immediately instead of on next search.
- More obvious search options: Buttons to switch between Simplified Chinese/Traditional Chinese/Jyutping/Pinyin/English are now larger and not abbreviated. @derekyin this is for you!
- Pour les utilisateurs francophones : La version 2016 de CFDICT, qui contient beaucoup plus d'entrées et définitions, est maintenant disponible! Pour en savoir plus, veuillez cliquer sur ce lien.
Notes:
- On Ubuntu 20.04: You must run `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:beineri/opt-qt-5.15.2-focal` before installing the .deb file. This version drops support for Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04.macOS/Windows/Linux (Ubuntu) v1.22.0207-release
New:
- Examples and parts of speech: In dictionaries such as words.hk, you'll see definitions with examples and (if available) their translations! You'll also notice labels such as 名詞, 動詞, and other parts of speech: super helpful.- Windows and Linux dark mode: Check under the Advanced tab in the settings page to enable dark mode!
- Automatic and manual database backups: Whenever you add or remove a source from the database, Jyut Dictionary will now attempt to automatically back up the database in case something goes wrong. On macOS and Linux, you'll also be able to restore from the backup from the Advanced tab in the settings page.
- Loads of new dictionaries: If you are a new user, the program now comes with not only CC-CEDICT/CC-CANTO and Tatoeba, but also words.hk, Kaifangcidian, Unihan, and the 兩岸三地 dictionaries! If you're upgrading from an older version, please visit the Github release page to download and add these new dictionaries.
Improvements:
- Translation bugs in French: The label for Pinyin colours is now fixed.- Dictionary replacement: If you attempt to add a dictionary that you've already added before, you will now be given the option to replace the copy you have with the contents from the new file.
- macOS font rendering: Display of Chinese fonts is now fixed on macOS.
Notes:
- On Ubuntu 16.04 and above, add the repository for Qt 5.15 before installing the .deb: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:beineri/opt-qt-5.15.2-bionic on 18.04, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:beineri/opt-qt-5.15.2-focal on 20.04, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:beineri/opt-qt-5.15.2-xenial on 16.04.macOS/Windows/Linux (Ubuntu) v0.20.0525-release
New:
- Sentences: View words in context, with sentences from Tatoeba!- Pronunciation: (Windows and Mac only) Click on the speaker icon to hear the word pronounced by your computer!
- Saved Words: Save words to view later or as reference.
- History: See what you've searched for in the past or what words you've previously looked at.
- Automatic Jyutping/Pinyin segmentation: No need to type spaces in between words when searching with Jyutping or Pinyin now.
Known issues:
- Not tested for non-Ubuntu Linux Distros: 🤷♂️ I do not have a device that isn't running Ubuntu or a derivative of Ubuntu and I am not willing to commit to guarantee it works with no issues on those systems.- Not working on Ubuntu 16.04: The .deb version of the program does not work on Ubuntu 16.04, due to the old pre-installed version of the SQLite driver not being compatible with FTS5. However, since the AppImage bundles in frameworks and libraries and Flatpak relies on a runtime with all libraries pre-installed, those do work on 16.04.
- Sadness on macOS Catalina: There are some font rendering issues with all versions of macOS Catalina.
macOS/Windows/Linux (Ubuntu) v0.19.0828-release
New:
- Settings: Changing a bunch of settings is now possible. Customize tone colours of Jyutping and Pinyin, whether to display simplified or traditional Chinese, and more.- Add and remove dictionaries: You can now add CFDICT and HanDeDict to the database to be searched! More dictionaries to come later, as time permits.
- Localization: The application is now translated to French (CA), French, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Cantonese, and Traditional Cantonese. Interface language can be customized under settings.
- Manual update checking: A manual update check can be triggered from under the "Help" menu item.
Improvements:
- Improved dictionary: Some entries were missing Jyutping previously, which has now been fixed.- Better fonts on Windows: The application by default uses Microsoft YaHei to display Chinese characters as much as possible.
Known issues:
- Not tested for non-Ubuntu Linux Distros: 🤷♂️- Not working on Ubuntu 16.04: The non-portable version of the program does not work on Ubuntu 16.04, due to the old pre-installed version of the SQLite driver not being compatible with FTS5. However, since the AppImage bundles in frameworks and libraries, that does work on 16.04.
macOS/Windows/Linux (Ubuntu) v0.19.0614-release
New:
- Coloured characters: Based on the pronunciation of a character, they are now coloured in! In order of Jyutping tones: light blue, light green, light purple, red, dark green, dark purple.- Pretty Pinyin: By default, instead of displaying numbers as tones beside pinyin, diacritics are used.
- Menu bar: Conforming to the macOS and GNOME HIG, there is now a menu bar in the application for standard menus–including cut/copy/paste.
- Tooltips: Confused about what the options are for searching? Tooltips now appear on a hover of the radio buttons.
- Updates: A popup will now notify you when there are new updates available to the application.
Improvements:
- Improved dictionary: Duplicate entries are now permitted, which means entries like 大 with multiple meanings now show both meanings.- Faster search: Performing a search now does not block typing text in the search bar.
Fixed:
- Never gonna give ü up: Searching for ü now works.- Font on Windows: The definition header now uses YaHei as much as possible.
