“Explore a creative space showcasing member projects of all kinds and skill levels.”

VR Club Universe is a project dedicated to creating a virtual reality platform to display projects developed by actual VR Club members. As members come and go, this universe will continue to showcase a portfolio of student creations ranging from beginner to experienced and with majors of all kinds.

The project was established in Winter 2016 as an eight member beginner project. Every year, students whether in project teams or as individuals create projects that were born from their own ideas and inspirations. Despite capturing the project through images, video, and GitHub repositories, it is difficult to actually try out the project and experience what has been made. Our goal is to preserve those projects and the legacy that the students bring when creating in this new and innovative field.

The application is designed to bring out the best of Virtual Reality to both new and experienced users. Visitors are placed in the VR Club spaceship and have accessed to ‘travel’ to different planets and galaxies. Each planet represents a student project. By doing this, we can promote the selection and enjoyment of 3D interactions in Virtual Reality and step away from 2D menus.

VR Club Universe acts as medium to view these projects with the HTC Vive (and eventually Oculus Rift) all without removing one’s headset. Because taking off and putting on the headset is immersion breaking and time-consuming, we strive to give users the ability to navigate all the projects available in the provided platform in one system. The application is developed through the Unity Game Engine.

We believe that this application can be useful to both students at UC San Diego and people off-campus. Students who submit their project to VR Club Universe can preserve their legacies and their contributions to the club and to the industry. Within VR Club, this application can be used to demo student projects to other students and potential collaborators. For people off-campus, VR Club Universe can serve as a medium to view Virtual Reality projects made by students to promote networking with industry professionals. Because each project is sorted by the year it was published, through continuous submissions, it could be possible to create a timeline of student projects from the early days of Virtual Reality to whatever future that awaits it.

Historical Timeline

The following is an overview of the timeline of the project and provides a list of the members and their roles, as well as a picture and/or video illustrating the application. The timeline is sectioned into quarters with each quarter being roughly 8-10 weeks long starting with the latest and current quarter. Approximately, Fall is September-December, Winter is January-March, Spring is April-June. Furthermore, our project started off as a Beginner Project with 2.5-5 hours of commitment and recently upgraded to become an Intermediate Project with 5-7.5 hours of commitment.
