virtual_material_palettes

This notebook and material was created for Virtual/Material: Color/Pigment, a 2021 workshop funded by the Kress Foundation in which I participated as an invited seminar leader.

Description

This notebook introduces participants to different methods of color quantization, which is the process of reducing the number of distinct colors in an image. The goal was to demonstrate the variability in how colors are computed and displayed and to prompt discussion about how digital colors relate to material colors. It was designed for graduate students in art and media history and does not assume any previous technical experience.
