MessagePack is an efficient binary serialization format which lets you exchange data among multiple languages like JSON.

With MessagePack we could reduce the memory usage. A short test with a json resource having 1000 lines showed a 25% memory beneficiation.

There's also an extension for Lua to include it into Redis. See http://msgpack.org/ for more details.
