"Default link type" does nothing

The option to select the "Default link type" has no effect on the editing interface.

If I set it to category:

Then assign that field to an entry type:

The button is always set to (No link). It'd expect it to be "Category". What's the purpose of this setting?

This only seems to work when adding the linkfield field to a global fieldlayout. When adding it to an entry, or matrix block it does not work
