It would be useful to make payu more amenable to being driven programmatically, for testing but also for generating experiments programmatically, e.g. parameter sweeps.

This issue can be a place to put thoughts when they arise, or link to examples where this is a problem to help inform the solution.

There is some interest in developing tools to enable automated generation and running of payu configurations for applications like parameter sweeps
