E-Paper would be bloody awesome but also a bit ridiculous.

But it would have the benefit of allowing to change the text based on the scenario.
For example, while cat is in range, just display the cats name.
When in ping mode, display a message "My name is XX plus contact details"
And in lost mode, a clear message "I'm lost, please notify owner..."

The power requirement would be extremely low. The price is also not outrageous at all.
Only problem, it makes waterproofing the enclosure a lot more difficult
