Currently curating a dataset for HCA lung for CELLxGENE, and Gloria Pryhuber and her team have assigned their samples to the specific bronchopulmonary segment of the lung. We did not see the lung ontologized at this level of granularity and was hoping to have it added as below:
Definition
The segment of the lung that is supplied by the tertiary bronchus of the same name.
There are a number of diagrams online, but here are a few publications/resources with images:
I agree and thank you for this addition.
Further detail: The identification of bronchopulmonary segments has particular use in radiology and thoracic surgery. Each segment typically has its own pulmonary arterial branch and thus, each bronchopulmonary segment is a portion of lung supplied by its own bronchus and artery. Each segment is functionally and anatomically discrete allowing a single segment to be surgically resected without affecting its neighboring segments. Infection may also tend to be restricted to a segment by the connective tissue dividing the segments.
