Matterbridge is a simple bridge coded in Python, which uses a Rest API to allow bridging between many chat systems. Does not require mattermost.

"Bridge between mattermost, IRC, gitter, xmpp, slack, discord, telegram, rocket.chat, hipchat (via xmpp), steam, twitch, ssh-chat, zulip, whatsapp, minecraft, reddit, facebook messenger, discourse and matrix with REST API"

Would solve #1100
A bridge to other chat protocols would be amazing

An additional argument: Rest API could also be used to address:
#1936 (API for bots)

Has anyone already a plan on what would have to be done?
If someone shows a direction, I'd be happy to help.
