I've added one to the wiki but maybe good to have it prominent in the readme?

I think that's a good idea.
When the addon is ready to load devices.json itself, I would also suggest moving a large part of the README in the wiki for advanced users.

With PR #95 addon should load devices.json automatically. Reminder so README and wiki can be updated when/if the PR is merged.
