It would be nice to have a function which checks for updates of a package (resp. all packages) but without installing anything. Either by adding suitable functions; or by adding a "dry_run = true/false" argument to the relevant update functions.

Sounds like a good idea, and probably not too difficult.

I should probably go for the first option: add new functions to check for updates, which would themselves be called by UpdatePackage.
