I added a printer through the system settings panel...

... but CUPS seems to think its name is Internet_Printing_Protocol_(ipp)

If you go to localhost:631/printers in your browser, you should see a table with a "Queue Name" and a "Description". Description is what is displayed in the system settings, and I'm guessing the queue name is what you are seeing in other places. Maybe it would be helpful to also display the queue name in the settings?

I know it's an older ticket, but I've lived with this through the past three Elementary versions. I usually setup my printers through cups because of this.
You're right in that the queuename is displayed in various parts of the OS. If you have just one printer it's not a real biggie, but when you have several printers, it becomes annoying real quick trying to identify which to choose.
The QueueName (which is how most people would recognize their printer) should definitely be available in the settings.
