In the location menu, add a new function: called "go to previous location."
This will be the only way to recover if one accidentally hits the [ ] buttons that are shown in the image.
Otherwise the user has absolutely no way to return to the previous spot that they were.

I'm sorry I didn't see your reply until now, as you are blocking my notifications.
That fails as the user has often not made an edit there yet, nor has set a bookmark there.
I have a better idea: simply add a confirmation dialog to the "[ ]" buttons: "Are you sure you want to expand to see entire layer coverage?"
