Hello, myself Shivang Vijay. I am new to open-source contributions and want to contribute to ControlCore-Projects. I have experience in C++, Python, Docker, Robotics, Simulations, and IoT.
I am looking forward to contributing to GSOC'23. I completed reading the paper "CONTROL-CORE: A Framework for Simulation and Design of Closed-Loop Peripheral Neuromodulation Control Systems." Hi @shivangvijay, one option is to look into the C++ implementation as it is mostly a prototype. Feel free to open specific/new discussion topics on these when you have questions and comments.

Greetings Everyone,
I am Parth, currently in my 2nd year of CSAI degree @ IIIT Delhi.
This is about GSoC 2023 Project Number 4(A Reference Implementation for concore Library in Java or Julia).
I am really confused about how are we supposed to convert the python implementation of concore to class based Java concore. What I really want to understand is the structure and dependencies of the current concore project and how I should proceed further.

Hi and welcome @parthkl021.

As you noted, the mostly used implementation of concore is in Python. But it also has an implementation in C++, Matlab, and Verilog. Looking at concore.hpp should give you a hint on how it was implemented in C++ (by a previous GSoC collaborator). Now, we seek a similar reference implementation in Java or Julia.

Please go through the current Python, C++, Matlab, and Verilog implementations in the repository. Please note we do not have a Java or Julia implementation. So this will be a significant code translation. If you are comfortable with Python (and Java or Julia), you can use Python implementation as the reference implementation.

Hello everyone, I’m Hrishikesh 👋🏻.
I’m excited to be a part of this open-source scientific community. My interest is inclined toward the prospective 4th listed project “Reference implementation for CONCORE Library in Java/Julia” for the upcoming summer program.

I have read the CONTROL-CORE paper authored by @pradeeban and team.

From this read and considering the other current projects, one of the important requirements of CONCORE is an enhancement in real-time execution speed, wide ecosystem compatibility, especially among the scientific community, and concurrency support, Java seems one of the good choices.

An insight into the specific preference for Java or Julia will be helpful. @pradeeban

Glad to hear you have spent time with the repository and the paper.

Regarding the preference, both Java and Julia have their benefits. Java is more widely used. Julia is considered high-performance and is also gaining popularity in the scientific community. We do not have preference for one over another. Choose a language that you are already an expert of. Google Summer of Code is short in time and probably not the best way to learn a new language.

I have prior experience in Java and Python. To get more familiar with the controller and physiological models working, I have installed the concore. I will be going through the codebase and documentation to understand the implementation.

1. Is there any UML of associated classes already? If not, then I can create it to make it easier to understand for documentation purposes, especially for other developers.
2. I couldn't find the unit tests for the existing python implementation. Any lead will be appreciated. ✌🏻

Hi @hrishikeshh,
I don't think we really followed the OOP principles to have proper UML diagrams. But you can create them, especially as part of your proposal.

We do not have unit tests either. Those are definitely nice to have (but we have limited developer time.) Feel free to contribute.

I have a doubt while going through the CONCORE code base.

As far as I can understand, for our initial reference for implementation in java, we have concore.hpp and concore.py. So, for other dependencies and modules such as "/tools" containing controllers and physiological models, do we have to write corresponding java modules too or will it be used via Jython?

Your guidance will be appreciated since I'm facing difficulties to understand the internal working and flow of program execution due to the unavailability of code documentation.

How should I approach this specific problem? Any suggestions/areas to prioritize while thinking about designing this implementation?

Hi @hrishikeshh,
You need to start with the core implementation. The C++ implementation is a good one to look at as a sample since it is minimal (compared to Python implementation, which has a lot). The rationale is to allow users (such as neuroscientists) to write concore programs in Java as you would do in Python, C++, Matlab, and Verilog now.

It is going to be yet another reference implementation of the concore protocol.

You can propose additional features in the Java implementation, but the core reference implementation is mandatory.

Hi @pradeeban i have worked both on python and julia. I still found python more versatile as compared to julia , However , the syntax is relatively easier for Julia

Hey @NehaAr. That is right. That's why we have used Python to implement concore studies mostly. But other language implementations help a diverse audience with more language options. Since we already have support for Python, Matlab, Verilog, and C++, a Java or Julia implementation will be helpful.
